Windows XP SP3 and Microsoft HD Audio UAA Problems

After repairing my Windows XP Prof SP3 installation, I had an issue with my sound. There was no volume icon in the taskbar & I couldn't install Microsoft UAA and I found out none of HD audio/modem devices where recognized even after installation of the correct drivers from the motherboard manufacturer because of the wrong UAA.

This fix from http://www.boredsysadmin.com/2008/03/windows-xp-sp3-and-microsoft-hd-audio.html solved my issue.

If updating the UAA doesn't fix your issue, you may want to try this fix http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T61-and-prior-T-series-ThinkPad/No-audio-device/m-p/15874#M5711. It was instructed below.

1. Chek if PnP SW Enumerator is installed on your machine (Device Manager -> System devices) - should be listed there!
2. If it is not there then we will probably solve it!
3. Locate machine.inf on your OS, copy it your Desktop and modify it (find ExcludeFromSelect=* and remove the line or simply exclude it from processing by adding a ; at the beginning).
4. Still with machine.inf open, search for SWENUM and check the location of SWENUM, mine reads like this SWENUM.CoInstallers.CopyFiles = 11 ; %windir%\System32
5. Find swenum.sys file on your XP installation CD (mine was in DRIVER.CAB) and copy it to the proper location (I am not sure if it is necessary but worked for me)
6. Go to Control Panel -> Add/Remove Hardware and follow the wizard towards manual selection of device to be added
7. Select Add System device
8. Select Have disk
9. Navigate where the saved machine.inf located (as per Step 3, it was sasved in your Desktop).
10. From the list select standard deviecs (in the left list) and Plug and Play Software Enumerator in the right list
11. Finish the installation

If it still does not work reinstall the audio adapters' drivers. It should work now.

VT-x is not available. (VERR_VMX_NO_VMX)

I was trying to install Windows SBS 2008 (64-bit) for trial, but I keeps receiving this error from Virtual Box everytime I tried to Start the system.

I enabled the Hardware VT from the BIOS (under Security menu) and restarted the computer - still the same error.

I disabled the Execute Bit from the BIOS - still the same error.

I untick Enable VT-x/AMD-V in VirtualBox Settings->System->Acceleration - it gave a different error.

I even downloaded the SecurAble to double-check if my virtualization & DEP are enabled, same with the 64-bit capacity - yes, I have virtualization & DEP enabled in my BIOS & I have 64-bit.

I also tried editing the XML file %systemdrive%\Users\%username%\.VirtualBox\Machines\<OS name>\<osname>.xml and type "false" for enabled of <HardwareVirtEx enabled="true" exclusive="false"/>

Shutting down the computer and leaving it off for 5 minutes fix the issue. I now have Windows SBS 2008 (64-bit) as the guest OS of my Vista (64-bit) parent OS.

IE makes CPU Usage as high as 98% due to CSS code

When designing a webpage, my computer used to freeze. When I checked the Task Manager, the CPU Usage reached to 100% wherein 98% is used by iexplorer.exe. I have been testing one of the webpage in Internet Explorer 6, 7 & 8 and each one of theml made the CPU Usage reached to 100%. Using Firefox alone had no effect - meaning, it had its normal CPU Usage while testing the webpage.

I checked my CSS and tried to delete some of the codes until I finally saw this code which uses all of my CPU resources:

#content { height: expression(document.getElementById("content").offsetHeight); }

That is the code for IE6 to compensate its inability to interpret top:0; and bottom:0;

XP disconnects from Vista shared file

We have a Vista server (Home Edition 32-bit), 3 XP clients and other 5 Vista clients joined together in a Workgroup. Almost twice a day, we have to restart the Vista server as the XP machine lost connection when trying to access the file and give the following errors:

  • when opening My Network Places = Error: Workgroup is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Network name is no longer available.
  • when opening the shared/mapped folder = Error: %Share% is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Access Denied.

I Googled the error, and tried the following but none of them totally fixed the issue. Please note that when I refer to client computer - it refers to XP installed PC, and the server is the Vista installed PC.

The only fix that made the XP connection stable is by disabling SMB2 at the server. Please note, you have to disable SMB2 in all of the Vista clients to prevent having an error. Edit the registry at your own risk. Always back up the registry before making any changes. If you do not feel comfortable editing the registry, do not attempt these instructions.

  1. Run "regedit" on Windows Server 2008 based computer.
  2. Expand and locate the sub tree as follows.
  3. HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters
  4. Add a new REG_DWORD key with the name of "Smb2" (without quotation mark)
  5. Value name: Smb2
    Value type: REG_DWORD
    0 = disabled
    1 = enabled
  6. Set the value to 0 to disable SMB 2.0, or set it to 1 to re-enable SMB 2.0.
  7. Reboot the server.

To read more about SMB, you can check this link http://www.petri.co.il/how-to-disable-smb-2-on-windows-vista-or-server-2008.htm
